Rob Dallison
Miami, Fort Lauderdale, South Florida United States Estados Unidos. Member of ATA (American Translators Association) My career has exposed me to extensive situations where translating and/or interpreting were necessary on a daily basis. Originally from the UK with a literary background, I lived and worked in France for 10 years and am now based in the USA since 2001. I am 100% bilingual in English and French, and I speak and write fluent Spanish. I can provide translation, proof-reading and interpreting services in all three languages. I am also a member of ATA (the American Translators Association) and will shortly be taking my ATA certification for English to French translation as well as French to English translation. Successful translation depends as much on cultural understanding as on linguistic knowledge. I work closely with my clients to ensure that their message is being translated - not just their words. Please consult the sample document (link on the right) to see an example of my work. I look forward to working with you! This, combined with my frequent visits to my home country, has made me become very aware of linguistic trends and gives me the edge when it comes to choosing the appropriate register/terminology when translating a text. I ALWAYS meet deadlines, in fact usually complete all projects with ample time to spare. All I ask of potential clients is to be given the chance to do a test piece, those who do so usually pick me! Fawwaz Zeidan
I have academic qualifications (BA, MA, PhD) in Arabic Language and Literature (specialisation drama and theatre) from Arab and British universities (see below). I have, also, gained accreditation in "Community Interpreting- Essential Skills and Knowledge" I have long experience in translation and interpretation stretching over 25 years. I have translated short and long documents from Arabic into English and vice versa while managing an Information & Advice Centre for Arabic-speaking people in London for 20 years. I have also done translation and interpretation work for solicitors, schools, advice centres and community organisations in London in recent months. (Please see Samples of translation work). In addition to my practical experience in translation, I taught two relevant courses to students at university level: Creative Arabic Writing and the Art of Translation from English into to Arabic. Knowledge and Use of Translation Techniques: In the translation assignments I undertake, I use different models and techniques of translation for different texts as appropriate. They include: literal, reformulation (or equivalence), transposition, modulation, adaptation, compensation, borrowing (especially in the IT field) and calque. Knowledge & use of interpreting techniques: In the interpreting assignments I have undertaken, I have used different methods of interpreting, including consecutive, liaison, simultaneous, whisper, summary, 1st and 3rd person techniques and sight translation (i.e. oral interpretation of a written text) as appropriate. I have also used my knowledge of the cultural background of clients and the UK system to make appropriate interventions during interpreting sessions for the benefits of both the service providers as well as the service users. Guiding principles & code of practice: My guiding principals when undertaking translation & interpretation assignments are: • Providing accurate and full translation of the text and in the case of interpreting full interpretation between the parties, the client and service provider without adding or omitting anything and with understanding of functional, conceptual and cultural differences between English and Arabic; • Observing impartiality and professionalism at all times and making sure that my personal opinions, own beliefs, values or views do not interfere with the translation or interpreting process ; • Full understanding of the importance of confidentiality and treating information obtained during the course of the translation or interpreting as strictly confidential; • Refraining from taking any personal advantage of any information obtained during the course of translation or interpretation; • Abstaining from establishing personal relationship with service providers or clients and maintaining professional boundaries with both parties at all times; • Full appreciation of the importance of punctuality and deadlines and strict commitment to the agreed time- framework; • Seeking clarifications on any phrase or concept used in the customer\'s original text before carrying out the required translation; • Clarifying any misunderstandings (if and when they occur) in an interpreting assignment to both the service provider and the client as appropriate; • Remaining calm whilst working under pressure or, in the case of interpreting, in situations where a client is experiencing severe distress or trauma; • Keeping records of the assignments undertaken and producing reports as appropriate; Command of Arabic & English: My mother tongue is Arabic. I was born in Palestine and received my primary and secondary education there. My keen interest in Arabic (language and literature) led me to Egypt where I studied the subject and gained BA and MA degrees from its best universities. I taught the subject at Birzeit university in Palestine for four years and later moved to the UK to join the School of Oriental & African Studies in London to read Arabic drama & theatre for a PhD degree which I acquired late 1984. While writing my PhD thesis in English and later on in my working career I have greatly improved my command of English language and have become almost bilingual. My command of Arabic and English has helped a great deal in developing and improving my skills in translation and interpreting. * BA in Arabic Language and Literature, Cairo University * MA in Arabic Drama & Theatre, Cairo University * PH D in Arabic Drama & Theatre, School of Oriental & African Studies, London University. * Various short courses in management, finance, human resources, interviewing skills and legal case-work. I have excellent track record in the following fields: * Human resources management, * Financial management and book-keeping, * Legal advice work in London, * English to Arabic and Arabic to English translation skills * Interpersonal and intergroup skills, * Teaching Arabic for people seekiing to learn the language (i.e. beginners) or those wishing to improve their level (i.e. advanced levels) Fawwaz Zeidan Kentish Town, London United Kingdom Reino Unido Advertisement/Marketing Agriculture/Environment Arts Communications Patents/Intellectual Property Cooking/Food/Beverages Education/Training Song lyrics/Poetry Film - Theatre Financial/Economics Health and Beauty History Hospitality Industry Insurance Internet/Multimedia Journalism - Press Legal Literature/Publishing Military Instructions/Manuals Politics Psychology/Psychiatry Social Sciences Media/Broadcasting Theology - Religion Adobe Acrobat Professional Adobe Photoshop Microsoft Office Microsoft Works Arabic English English (British) Translation and Interpretation Services (Click here to see this translator's profile)
