Dominique STEPHANY
Liaising with French-speaking outside agencies in my 25 years as Head of Modern Languages in several high-profile educational establishments in the North-East of England and producing many bilingual documents and dissertations. Organizer of exchange links between English and French schools. Interpreting for groups of visiting English tourists in Brittany. Own properties in France and am familar with "notaire talk" Freelance English to French, French to English translation since 2005 : history of the Crusades, 10,000 wd doc. about spread of AIDS, tourist office website pages, real estate documentation, CVs, insurance documents, marriage/divorce papers, short stories, local government planning briefs, instruction manuals, menus etc. I also work with several translation agencies, in the UK and abroad. I have worked as a French examiner at all levels for the last 28 years: • 1980/2003: yearly involvement in all aspects of public examinations in French for the YREB (Yorkshire Regional Examination Board), the JMB ( Joint Matriculation Board), and finally AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance), including oral examining at O’ and A’ Levels, serving as Assistant Chief Examiner for A’Level French (JMB) for 3 years, professional RECORDINGS for various listening examinations, drafting of examination papers, moderating coursework etc. • 2007/08: examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organisation (Diploma level) • 2007: registered as a French examiner by the Institute of Linguists (UK) . 2008: A\'Level French examiner for AQA (Assessment & Qualifications Alliance) Finally, what makes me a good translator? Throughout my long teaching career, particularly as a high-profile Head of a Modern Languages Department, I have been fanatical about grammatical and spelling accuracy. I am an avid reader (1 book a week on average, alternating between French and English) of contemporary fiction, autobiographies, political memoirs and history and keep up with French current affairs both on the net and by listening to French radio. This, combined with my frequent visits to my home country, has made me become very aware of linguistic trends and gives me the edge when it comes to choosing the appropriate register/terminology when translating a text. I ALWAYS meet deadlines, in fact usually complete all projects with ample time to spare. All I ask of potential clients is to be given the chance to do a test piece, those who do so usually pick me!
